Day 8: Organizing Your Garage And Laundry Room!

Day 8: Organizing Your Garage and Laundry Room!

Day 8 is a two piece post!  Below are some easy tips and tricks for organizing these your garage and laundry room.  The tips will minus the hassle while getting the most out of these spaces.

The Garage:

Give your garage a quickie lift.  After emptying the garage and before you start to replace everything, maybe throw on a new coat of paint to give the room a fresh look. Maybe even purchase some new storage items.

Begin by grouping like items together.  Whether it’s for the car or garden, group together each category and place them in labeled bins.  Keep these items in an easily accessible place.

Invest in quality racks, shelving and hooks.  Shelves, rack and hooks are great ways to utilize unused space.   You can find affordable systems at stores like IKEA and Lowes.  (For even more affordable shelving, you can measure your walls and have the wood cut at your local home improvement stores.)

Take advantage of ceiling space!

Label all hazardous and sharp and keep away from children. ie:  gasoline, oil, washer fluid, etc… That’s a given, but you never know!

Keep on top of things once you’re organized.  Don’t let your garage become the “place where you dump stuff”.  Garage’s are such great for spaces for storage!

The Laundry Room:

Give your laundry room a quickie makeover.  Light and airy colors help set the tone for a clean room.  Maybe even purchase some new items like a hamper or bins for this room too!

Store. Toss. Donate.  Do you keep storage in your garage? Sort through your stores items, making different piles of stuff you’d like to keep, toss or donate.  Use the 6 month rule to help you decide what you want to keep and what you’d like to get rid of.  If you haven’t used an item in 6 months or more and have no sentimental attachment or use for this item, toss or donate it!

Clean off the detergent bottles.  You know what I am talking about.  You go to pour the detergent from the “easy pour spout”, but it never fails, the detergent is leaking down the side!  Rinse your bottles to give them that “just bought” feeling, while avoiding a mess on your hands int he future.

Store your laundry accessories instead of showcasing them.  Hide the laundry supplies in bins or cabinets to avoid the look of clutter.

Designate a bin per family member or room.  If siblings share a room, two baskets or bins will just add to clutter.  Label or color code each bin for each family member if space allows.

Accessories worth investing in:

a label maker

stackable storage bins

large gallon trash bags (garage)

open bins (laundry room)

a hamper (laundry room)

hooks

ironing board (laundry room)

flash light (garage)

One of my all time favorite places to shop for all things organization is the Container Store’s Special Savings Clearance and Sale Items.  (You’re sure to find a great deals here!)

  1. Thanx for stopping ’round my site. I’m happy you found something worth signing up to follow. I must make my wife, the amateur chef, and my daughter, both fellow-bloggers, aware of your site. I look forward to more visits, and comments.

  2. My laundry is pretty well done. I wipe the spout each time I pour, I mean, the clothes are there, use them.. And I hate that messy yuck feel anyway. Baskets are placed so everyone knows which is the dirty pile and which ones have clean clothes (I’m not that good, there are often baskets of clothes waiting to be folded). Love your ideas though, quick and handy, and I try and use the 6 month rule too.

  3. I love organization!! Haven’t tackled the garage yet…but I just did my pantry and I absolutely adore it. Just posted about it…take a look when you get a chance.
